Alex Huettel has been officially named the offensive line coach for East Carolina University, head coach Blake Harrell announced Thursday. Huettel brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of developing strong offensive lines at multiple programs.
Huettel comes to ECU following a three-year tenure at Old Dominion University (2023–2025), where he helped the Monarchs achieve 21 wins and two bowl appearances. In 2025, ODU finished with a 10-3 record, including six Sun Belt Conference victories and a 24-10 win over South Florida in the StaffDNA Cure Bowl. Under Huettel’s guidance, the offensive line contributed to national rankings in rushing offense (7th, 283.3 ypg), total offense (16th, 454.7 ypg), scoring offense (29th, 32.0 ppg), first downs (31st, 293), tackles for loss allowed (26th, 4.38 pg), and sacks allowed (36th, 1.54 pg). Seniors Zach Barlev (first team) and Ryan Joyce (second team) earned All-Sun Belt honors while protecting quarterback Colton Joseph, who was named the league’s offensive player of the year.

In 2024, Huettel’s offensive line led the Sun Belt in rushing and ranked 14th nationally, averaging 209.8 yards per game and totaling 2,517 yards—the second-most in program history. The Monarchs set a single-game rushing record with 406 yards in the season finale at Arkansas State, highlighted by Barlev’s third-team All-Sun Belt selection.
Prior to ODU, Huettel served as Offensive Line/Run Game Coordinator at Fordham University. In 2022, the Rams posted one of the most prolific offenses in FCS history, averaging 609 yards per game and ranking second nationally in scoring (49.5 points per game), with the offensive line contributing 196.5 rushing yards per game. His line featured multiple All-Patriot League players, including Phil Saleh, a second-team All-American.
Huettel’s coaching resume also includes a graduate assistant role at Cincinnati (2019), where the Bearcats went 11-3, captured the AAC West Division with a 7-1 record, and finished the season with a 38-6 bowl victory over Boston College. He previously served as offensive line coach at Gannon University (2018) and began his coaching career as an offensive graduate assistant at Bowling Green University (2016–2017).
A native of Pickerington, Ohio, Huettel was a standout offensive lineman at Bowling Green from 2011–2015. He was a two-time MAC champion, set a program record with 55 consecutive starts, earned three All-MAC selections, and received first-team All-America honors from Phil Steele as a senior. He played in the 2016 East-West Shrine Game and attended an NFL minicamp with the New York Giants.
Huettel earned a bachelor’s degree in human development and family service from Bowling Green in 2015. He and his wife Danielle have two sons, Boone and Gus.
