BREAKING: UW Coach Jedd Fisch Addresses Team’s Complicated QB Situation Amid Questions of Trust, Leadership and Program Stability

Washington head coach Jedd Fisch publicly addressed the Huskies’ quarterback situation this week, emphasizing accountability, reflection and a path forward after a turbulent few days involving starter Demond Williams Jr.

Williams, a rising junior and the quarterback Fisch has built the program around, briefly entered the transfer portal earlier this month before deciding to return to Washington within 48 hours. Fisch said the decision came after extensive conversations and reflection, noting that the circumstances surrounding the move extended beyond football.

Fisch acknowledged that Williams must work to rebuild trust with teammates, coaches, administrators and fans, but also urged understanding for the pressures modern college athletes face. He stressed that repairing relationships and representing the university positively on and off the field will be central to moving forward.

The coach also addressed the timing of Williams’ initial transfer announcement, which coincided with a UW athletics celebration of life for women’s soccer player Mia Hamant. Fisch confirmed that Williams has apologized for the timing and will personally address the women’s soccer team, reiterating that there was no intent to distract from the memorial.

Despite the brief uncertainty, Fisch praised the rest of the roster for its maturity and said reintegrating Williams into team activities has been smooth. With winter workouts underway, Fisch made it clear that the focus has shifted toward preparation for the 2026 season and maintaining stability at the most important position on the field.
