The Philadelphia Phillies saw their outfield depth thin out this offseason after parting ways with Nicholas Castellanos and losing Harrison Bader.
Although they added Adolis García, the team still needs a reliable fourth outfielder to spell the starters.
According to Fansided’s Christopher Kline, Philadelphia could address that gap by signing veteran Randal Grichuk to form a platoon with Brandon Marsh, giving the lineup a right-handed complement to Marsh’s left-handed bat.
Kline noted that the Phillies could use an upgrade over Johan Rojas, and that Gabriel Rincones Jr. doesn’t offer the right-handed balance the roster requires.
While Grichuk may not provide elite defense, he continues to generate solid contact and has traditionally hit left-handed pitching well, making him a logical platoon option.
He would essentially fill a role similar to what Austin Hays or Weston Wilson handled in previous seasons.
Last year, Grichuk posted a .228/.273/.401 slash line with 18 doubles, nine home runs, and 27 RBIs across 113 games. While those numbers aren’t eye-popping, they’re serviceable for a bench role focused on matchups against lefties.
Projected to command a modest one-year, $4 million deal, Grichuk would be an affordable, low-risk addition.
If he underperforms, the Phillies could move on without significant financial consequences, making him a sensible depth piece to consider.
