New York Giants Strike Gold Again: Giants Add Lightning-Fast Playmaker to Roster with $4.5 Million Contract, Boosting Offense and Excitement

The New York Giants have officially signed wide receiver Calvin Austin III to a one-year deal worth up to $4.5 million, according to his representatives.

The move adds a dynamic, game-breaking weapon to New York’s offense as the Giants look to enhance their passing attack and bring more vertical threat to their receiving corps.

Austin, 26, was selected in the fourth round (138th overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft out of University of Memphis by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Though undersized at 5-foot-7¾ and 170 pounds, Austin possesses elite athletic traits that make him an explosive playmaker.

His 4.32-second 40-yard dash, 1.44-second 10-yard split, 39-inch vertical jump, and 11-foot-3 broad jump highlight his rare combination of speed, power, and explosiveness.

Beyond pure speed, Austin has exceptional agility, acceleration, and route-running skills, which allow him to create separation and thrive in space, especially in the slot.

During his three-year stint with the Steelers, Austin appeared in 48 games, including 16 starts. Over the past two seasons, he caught 67 passes for 920 yards and seven touchdowns, while recording only five drops—an impressive level of consistency for a young receiver.

Notably, Austin made a memorable impact in his final game under Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh, catching the game-winning touchdown in Harbaugh’s last game at the helm, demonstrating his ability to deliver in high-pressure situations.

What This Means for the Giants
While Austin won’t completely solve New York’s wide receiver needs on his own, he immediately fills a key slot receiver role vacated by Wan’Dale Robinson and adds a true deep-threat element to the offense.

His blazing speed and agility give the Giants an explosive weapon capable of stretching defenses vertically and horizontally. Austin can exploit lighter defensive boxes, punish teams stacking the line to stop the run, and create open-field opportunities for big gains.

Austin also brings experience as a punt returner, with 72 career returns including a memorable touchdown against the Giants in 2024. His dual-threat ability as both a receiver and return specialist makes him a versatile asset, capable of changing the momentum of a game in a single play.

The Giants still face the challenge of finding a starting-caliber outside receiver to complement Malik Nabers, but Austin’s addition provides a high-upside, game-breaking piece to their offense.

With his speed, playmaking ability, and experience, he could become a key contributor in big moments and help New York create more explosive scoring opportunities.

With spring training underway, the Giants will look to integrate Austin into their system and leverage his unique skill set to elevate the offense heading into the 2026 season.

Fans can expect him to be a critical part of New York’s game plan, particularly in situations where stretching the field and creating mismatches are essential.
