Team USA Loses Another Crucial Player, Mets Welcome Him Back Ahead of MLB Season

The New York Mets had a whirlwind offseason, losing key players like Pete Alonso, Edwin Diaz, Jeff McNeil, and Brandon Nimmo, while adding notable names such as Freddy Peralta, Jorge Polanco, Devin Williams, Marcus Semien, Luke Weaver, and Bo Bichette.

Among their top offseason acquisitions, right-hander Clay Holmes recently represented Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, delivering a solid outing against Great Britain.

However, roster adjustments were announced today: Will Vest, Tyler Rogers, and Tim Hill are replacing Michael Wacha, Tarik Skubal, and Ryan Yarbrough, who have returned to their MLB teams for spring training. Holmes’ time with Team USA has also ended for now, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Holmes, 32, who became a starter for the first time in 2025, was signed by the Mets with plans to slot him into the starting rotation.

A two-time All-Star with experience both as a starter and reliever, Holmes’ WBC stint was brief—but returning to Mets camp could be beneficial for both him and the team. Last season, he went 12-8 with a 3.53 ERA in 31 starts and 2 relief appearances, recording 129 strikeouts over 165⅔ innings.

Prioritizing his health and preparation for the MLB season likely factored into his decision to leave the WBC, avoiding potential injury while still having the chance to play alongside former teammate Aaron Judge.

With two years and $26 million remaining on his contract (with an opt-out after the season), Holmes’ move could also be strategic for future free agency.

For Team USA, losing Holmes and other players represents a shift in the pitching staff, which may impact their performance as they prepare to face Canada following a tough loss to Italy.

While the roster changes are significant, the Americans will look to regroup and start the tournament strong.
