The offseason for the Philadelphia Phillies has been eventful, especially surrounding star slugger Bryce Harper and president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski.
Tension briefly surfaced after Dombrowski made remarks implying Harper might no longer be at an elite level, comments that Harper later described as surprising and disappointing because he believed the organization preferred to keep internal matters private.
Despite the brief controversy, the Phillies continued reshaping their roster during the offseason, highlighted by a major move to secure starting pitcher Jesús Luzardo for the long term.
According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, Philadelphia signed the left-hander to a five-year, $135 million extension that runs through the 2031 season and includes a club option for 2032.
However, committing that much money to Luzardo likely removes the Phillies from future pursuit of Tarik Skubal, the ace of the Detroit Tigers who is expected to be one of the most coveted pitchers in the next free-agent class after back-to-back Cy Young–winning seasons.
Analysts note that with major contracts already tied up in Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, and now Luzardo, the Phillies’ pitching budget may already be largely committed.
While that means Philadelphia may miss out on adding arguably the best pitcher in baseball, the team still appears well positioned with its current rotation and could remain a competitive and exciting contender in the years ahead. ⚾
