When J.T. Realmuto re-signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in January, it intensified a competition for the backup catcher role between veterans Garrett Stubbs and Rafael Marchán.
With both players out of minor-league options, the Phillies will likely keep only one on the Opening Day roster, meaning the other could be placed on waivers or become a free agent.
According to MLB.com reporter Todd Zolecki, Marchán is currently projected to serve as Realmuto’s backup, which could push Stubbs off the roster.

Stubbs, who signed a split contract that pays him $925,000 in the majors or $575,000 in Triple-A, would have the option to accept a minor-league assignment if he clears waivers or choose free agency—though doing so would mean giving up his guaranteed minor-league salary.
Stubbs, 32, joined the Phillies in 2022 and has appeared in 146 MLB games, earning a reputation as an energetic clubhouse presence even if his offensive impact has been limited. However, the younger Marchán may offer greater upside, particularly defensively.
As the Phillies pursue a championship season, the team’s decision will ultimately come down to which catcher gives them the best chance to win from Opening Day onward. ⚾
