The Missouri Tigers have officially named transfer quarterback Austin Simmons as their starter for the 2026 season, following a competitive spring practice battle.
Simmons, who transferred from the Ole Miss Rebels, was chosen over rising talent Matt Zollers after 15 spring practices, giving the Tigers a promising signal-caller with experience and high upside.

This decision comes after former starter Beau Pribula transferred to the Virginia Cavaliers, leaving a crucial vacancy at the quarterback position.
Simmons began his college career at Ole Miss at just 17 years old, showcasing remarkable potential despite his youth. During the 2025 season, he started as the Rebels’ QB1 but was sidelined by an ankle injury and lost the job to Trinidad Chambliss.

In limited playing time last season, Simmons demonstrated efficiency and big-play ability, averaging 9.9 yards per attempt and 16.5 yards per completion, with a notable 7.8% big-time throw rate. His strong metrics and raw talent made him a highly sought-after transfer in the portal.
Challenging Simmons for the starting role was Matt Zollers, a four-star recruit from Missouri’s 2025 class. Zollers stepped in as a freshman following Pribula’s injury, completing 53% of his passes for 503 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions while compiling a 1-2 record over eight games.
Missouri’s coaching staff has praised Zollers’ potential, noting that he remains a key part of the program’s future and will continue developing behind Simmons.
By naming Simmons the starter, Missouri is betting on his experience and upside to lead the Tigers’ offense immediately. With two years of eligibility remaining, he provides an opportunity to stabilize the quarterback position while allowing Zollers to gain more preparation time before potentially taking over in future seasons.
Simmons’ arrival also underscores the growing impact of the transfer portal in college football, where programs can quickly address key positional needs.
The Tigers’ fans can expect a dynamic and capable leader under center as the team prepares for the 2026 campaign. Simmons’ combination of youth, talent, and experience at a high-level program positions Missouri to compete effectively, even as Zollers develops into a future star.
With spring practices complete and the quarterback decision made, all eyes will now turn to how Simmons performs in the upcoming season opener and whether he can live up to the high expectations that come with his transfer.
