The Miami Marlins have regained right-handed pitcher Zach McCambley after he spent time with the Philadelphia Phillies.
According to The Athletic’s Matt Gelb, McCambley returned to Miami this past weekend. The move stems from the Rule 5 Draft: McCambley was left off the Marlins’ 40-man roster this offseason, allowing the Phillies to select him.
However, because he didn’t make Philadelphia’s Opening Day roster, the rules required that he be sent back to Miami.
Standing 6-foot-2, McCambley is expected to start the season in Triple-A within the Marlins’ system.
This spring, he pitched 7.1 innings for the Phillies with a 1.23 ERA, though he also recorded six walks and just four strikeouts, which may have raised concerns for Philadelphia.
McCambley has shown consistent performance in the minors over recent seasons. In 36 outings with Triple-A Jacksonville last year, he posted a 3.32 ERA, and in 11 appearances at Double-A Pensacola, he had a 2.11 ERA.
His career minor league strikeout rate sits at 10.8 per nine innings, with a walk rate of 3.2.
While McCambley’s MLB debut may not come with the Phillies, the Marlins now have a proven arm back in their system who could contribute at the major league level in the future.
