Roster Shake-Up: Mets Make Tough Calls on Opening-Day Roster By Cutting Ties with Another Crucial Arm as White Sox Claim Him in Waiver Shuffle

Even after finalizing their Opening Day roster on Thursday, the New York Mets made a few additional roster moves on Friday, including losing a potential depth pitcher back to the Chicago White Sox.

Hudson Returns to White Sox

As part of the early-season roster shuffle, reliever Bryan Hudson was designated for assignment by the Mets.

Hudson, acquired from Chicago in February for cash considerations, was claimed off waivers by the White Sox, effectively returning him to his former team.

The 28-year-old southpaw had pitched 3.1 innings in four Spring Training appearances, posting a 16.20 ERA and 2.40 WHIP, including two home runs allowed.

Hudson previously spent time with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers after being drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the third round of the 2015 MLB Draft.

Following several seasons in the Cubs’ minor league system, he signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers in 2022.

Rortvedt and Bruján Outrighted

In separate moves, catcher Ben Rortvedt and outfielder Vidal Bruján cleared waivers and were outrighted to Triple-A Syracuse. Rortvedt, claimed off waivers from the Dodgers in February, had served as a key backup catcher during last year’s postseason.

Bruján, who spent time with the Cubs, Orioles, and Braves in 2025, was briefly with the Minnesota Twins before being traded to the Mets. Both will begin the 2026 season in the minors as the Mets continue to refine their roster.
