Potential Game-Change: Former Reds Key Standout Shines in Rangers’ Triple-A Debut, Making a Strong Case for a Return to the Majors and Poised to Bolster Texas’ Bullpen as He Works to Revive His MLB Career

Díaz Signed to Fill Rangers’ Closer Void

When the Texas Rangers inked Alexis Díaz to a one-year, $1 million deal in December, expectations were high that he could step into the team’s closer role. The bullpen lacked a full-time closer last season, with Shawn Armstrong, Robert Garcia, and Luke Jackson each recording just nine saves. In 2025, the Rangers converted only 37 of 66 save opportunities, and they’re already 0-for-1 on save chances this year.

Past Success, Recent Struggles

Díaz, 29, had 75 saves for the Cincinnati Reds from 2022–2024, showcasing his potential as a reliable late-inning arm. However, his 2025 season was disappointing, posting an 8.15 ERA in 17 2/3 innings across three MLB teams (Reds, Dodgers, Braves). Those struggles continued in his first spring with Texas, where he allowed eight earned runs, three hits (including a homer), and four walks with only one strikeout over 1 2/3 innings in three appearances.

DFA and Move to Triple-A

Due to his struggles, Díaz was designated for assignment on March 13 to clear a 40-man roster spot for left-handed reliever Jalen Beeks. After clearing waivers, he was sent to Triple-A Round Rock, giving him a chance to reset and regain form.

Strong First Outing in Round Rock

Díaz made an immediate impression in his debut for the Express, pitching a perfect eighth inning against the Sugar Land Space Cowboys. He struck out Shay Whitcomb and Carlos Pérez and got Taylor Trammel to fly out, throwing 12 pitches with nine strikes. Limiting walks—previously a challenge—was a positive sign for his development.

Path Back to the Majors

If Díaz continues to perform well in Triple-A, he could see another call-up later this season. While being off the 40-man roster may delay his MLB return, strong outings in Round Rock could make him the next reliever the Rangers turn to amid bullpen injuries or struggles, keeping hope alive for his redemption at the major league level.
