Former J.D. Martinez is transitioning into a front-office role with the New York Mets, signaling what appears to be the conclusion of his playing career.
Career Highlights and Recent Playing History
Martinez, who spent the 2023 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, appeared in 113 games and hit 33 home runs, bouncing back after a down year with the Boston Red Sox in 2022. His move to the Dodgers allowed him to regain form, and he later joined the Mets for the 2024 season following his resurgence.
During his career, Martinez built a strong connection with Mookie Betts, first as teammates on the Red Sox and later with the Dodgers, a relationship that would continue to influence his post-playing role.
Transition to the Front Office
Although Martinez has not formally announced his retirement, he is taking on an advisory role with the Mets, according to Tim Healy of The Boston Globe. In this capacity, he will be present in the clubhouse, supporting players both on the field and likely in a hitting-coach-like role. While the Dodgers often offer former players similar opportunities, the Mets are officially bringing him on board.
Mentorship with Mookie Betts
Martinez has actively helped Betts overcome challenges, including assisting him during a difficult 2025 season hampered by injuries. On Dodger Talk with David Vassegh, Martinez explained how he traveled to work with Betts, emphasizing the trust and understanding they’ve built over the years.

“I mean, me and Mook go way back, so for him, I definitely made the exception of coming out and spending a weekend with him to try to get him back on track,” Martinez said.
He added, “It was fun. We did it a few times. I did it in LA, too. I think we built a lot of trust. He values my opinion on everything, and we work well together.

I have a really good understanding of his swing and his mind. Mookie’s talent is unbelievable, but sometimes this game derails you, and you need someone to lock it back in.”
Martinez’s new role reflects both his experience as a player and his ability to mentor star teammates, bridging his transition from on-field contributions to strategic and developmental guidance in the clubhouse.
