South Carolina Gamecock star and five-time Pro Bowl cornerback has officially retired from the NFL, bringing an end to his outstanding career. — Shutdown era officially ends

Five-time Pro Bowl cornerback officially announced his retirement from the NFL on Thursday, April 2, 2026.

The 35-year-old defensive star shared the news through a heartfelt social media post, ending a storied 13-season career.

Known for his elite man-to-man coverage skills, Gilmore’s departure marks the end of an era for one of the most technical and dominant defensive backs of the modern game.

Selected 10th overall by the Buffalo Bills in the 2012 NFL Draft, Gilmore quickly established himself as a premier talent.

However, his career reached legendary heights after signing with the New England Patriots in 2017.

During his tenure in Foxborough, he became the centerpiece of Bill Belichick’s defense, earning two First-Team All-Pro selections and playing a vital role in the team’s Super Bowl LIII victory over the Los Angeles Rams.

The pinnacle of Gilmore’s individual success came in 2019, when he was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

That season, he led the league with six interceptions and 20 passes defended, becoming one of the few cornerbacks in history to win the prestigious award.

His ability to “lock down” the opponent’s best receiver earned him the nickname “GillyLock,” a persona that defined his reputation across the league.

Following his time in New England, Gilmore transitioned into a highly respected veteran leader for several organizations.

He brought his expertise to the Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, Dallas Cowboys, and finally the Minnesota Vikings in 2024.

Although he remained a free agent throughout the 2025 season, his impact on younger players and his consistent statistical output—finishing with 32 career interceptions and 149 passes defended—solidified his resume.

In his retirement statement, Gilmore expressed deep gratitude to the five franchises he represented and hinted at his future aspirations.

With a Super Bowl ring, a DPOY trophy, and five Pro Bowls to his name, he is widely considered a lock for the Patriots Hall of Fame and a strong candidate for Canton. “I gave the game everything I had,” Gilmore wrote, “and I leave with no regrets.”
