Pitching Power Rising 🔥: Phillies Make Statement Move, Activate Another High-Impact Right-Hander to Bolster Championship-Caliber Rotation

The Philadelphia Phillies officially bolstered their bullpen on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, by activating right-handed reliever Orion Kerkering from the 15-day injured list.

Kerkering, who missed the start of the 2026 season due to a right hamstring strain suffered during spring training, provides a significant boost to a relief corps that has already shown early-season strength.

To make room on the 26-man roster, the team optioned left-handed reliever Kyle Backhus to the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

Kerkering’s return marks the end of a brief rehab stint where he allowed only one run over four innings in Triple-A.

The 25-year-old was a workhorse for Philadelphia in 2025, posting a 3.30 ERA across a career-high 69 appearances while striking out 65 batters in 60 innings.

Manager Rob Thomson indicated that Kerkering will initially slot into a setup and middle-relief role, though he may be eased back into high-leverage situations as he readjusts to major league hitters.

For Kyle Backhus, the demotion comes after a mixed debut with the big-league club.

Acquired in an offseason trade with Arizona, the 27-year-old sidearmer earned an Opening Day roster spot but struggled in his first appearance, surrendering three runs.

Although he followed that outing with three scoreless appearances to lower his ERA, he remained the only middle reliever with minor league options left, making him the logical choice to be sent down when Kerkering returned.

The roster move comes as the Phillies’ bullpen is finding its stride.

Heading into the April 7 matchup against the San Francisco Giants, the unit was fresh off a performance featuring five scoreless innings in a 6-4 victory.

With Kerkering back in the fold, Philadelphia adds another high-velocity arm to a group that includes Jhoan Duran, Jose Alvarado, and Brad Keller, further solidifying a unit projected by FanGraphs to be one of the best in MLB this season.

Looking ahead, Kerkering’s activation is the first of several expected reinforcements for the Phillies’ pitching staff.

While the bullpen gains a reliable righty, the team is still awaiting the full-strength return of ace Zack Wheeler, who is working back from offseason surgery.

For now, the “Orion Kerkering redemption tour” begins as the young right-hander looks to build on his strong 2025 regular season and put a difficult postseason finish behind him.
