Tyler Freeman played 88 games for the Cleveland Guardians in 2022 and 2023, quickly earning manager Terry Francona’s trust with his consistent contact hitting and defensive flexibility.
Now with the Colorado Rockies, Freeman could be a strong trade option for the Cincinnati Reds, who are in need of outfield depth.
The 26-year-old has been impressive this season, batting .316/.413/.421 and heating up even more with a .363 average since May 28 while primarily manning right field—an area where the Reds have struggled significantly, posting a .212 average and one of the league’s worst wRC+ ratings in that stretch.
Originally an infielder, Freeman transitioned to the outfield in 2023 and has since become a full-time outfielder.
Traded to Colorado in exchange for Nolan Jones before the 2025 season, the move has benefitted both teams.
Although Freeman is under team control through 2029, the struggling Rockies—potentially headed for a historically poor season—may be motivated to move him for future assets ahead of the trade deadline.
For the Reds, acquiring Freeman would not only shore up their outfield but also provide a versatile option in the utility role, where current options like Rece Hinds and Connor Joe haven’t been standout performers.
As Cincinnati begins to build momentum midseason, a move for Freeman could help bolster their chances of maximizing another breakout campaign from Elly De La Cruz.
