The Toronto Blue Jays should strongly consider adding a starting pitcher before the trade deadline to build on the momentum they’ve gained this season.
Their rotation remains the biggest weakness on the roster, but with several potential arms expected to be available, the opportunity is there.
Bryan Jaeger of Jays Journal recently suggested the Blue Jays make a bold move for Texas Rangers ace Jacob deGrom — if Texas decides to become sellers at the deadline.

“If the Rangers front office decides to sell, they could capitalize on the limited number of sellers by trading Jacob deGrom for valuable assets,” Jaeger explained.
However, deGrom’s situation is complicated. He’s signed through 2027 with $115.1 million owed over the next three seasons, plus a 2028 club option worth $20 million that could become a $37 million player option depending on performance.
Given deGrom’s age (37) and injury history — he hasn’t pitched more than 97 innings in any of the last five seasons — acquiring him would be a risk.

Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins would likely need to absorb the full contract and send over a couple of lower-tier prospects.
That said, this scenario is highly improbable. There have been no credible reports linking deGrom to trade talks, and the Rangers still see him as a cornerstone of their team.
His contract alone makes him a difficult trade piece. But if the Rangers opt to reset their franchise, the Blue Jays may be one of the few teams willing to take on such a deal.
It’s a long shot, but in baseball, anything is possible.
