The Brisbane Broncos have not only been making waves on the field but also proving their excellence off it, with four players recognised at the League Ahead Academic and Excellence Awards in Sydney on Tuesday night.
The prestigious annual ceremony, hosted by the NRL and the Rugby League Players Association, celebrates those within the game who excel in education, cultural leadership, vocational training, and entrepreneurial pursuits.
This year, Fletcher Baker and Ben Talty shared the Entrepreneur of the Year title, while Corey Jensen and Hayley Maddick were both selected for the Academic Team of the Year, underlining the Broncos’ commitment to life beyond rugby league.
Baker and Talty, who grew up together in the Hunter Region, have turned their off-field vision into reality by co-founding Nefertum, a fragrance brand sourcing and bottling high-quality perfumes. The business, which began after an off-season trip to Egypt, has grown rapidly with products now stocked in eight pharmacies and five gift stores, while also attracting a growing online following.
Talty explained the inspiration behind their venture: “When we were in Egypt, my mum suggested I try out an oil shop. That sparked the idea, and we stayed connected with a supplier who is now our partner. We wear the fragrances ourselves, and the boys love it too.”
The pair’s entrepreneurial spirit has not only earned recognition but has also highlighted the opportunities for players to invest in careers away from the game. Talty even paid tribute to their business with a post-try celebration earlier this season against the Titans.
Meanwhile, Corey Jensen and Hayley Maddick were applauded for their dedication to study, earning a place in the Academic Team of the Year. Their inclusion reinforces the Broncos’ culture of balance between football and personal development, showcasing how players can achieve both on-field success and off-field growth.
Baker, Talty, and Jensen proudly represented the club at the ceremony in Sydney, capping off a night that reflected the Broncos’ values of discipline, hard work, and excellence in all areas of life.
As the spotlight shines on the Broncos’ NRL and NRLW stars, this recognition demonstrates that their influence stretches well beyond the game, inspiring fans and teammates alike through education, leadership, and entrepreneurial ambition.
