Rizzo to Retire as a Cub
Former Chicago Cubs star Anthony Rizzo revealed Wednesday that he will retire from Major League Baseball after a 14-season career.
Although he did not play during the 2025 season, Rizzo will officially retire as a member of the Cubs this Saturday.
He last played for the New York Yankees through the 2024 season.
Return as Cubs Ambassador
The Cubs announced that Rizzo will rejoin the organization as a team ambassador.
He is also set to throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Saturday when the Cubs host the Tampa Bay Rays at 1:20 p.m.

The Cubs honored Rizzo with a video tribute on Instagram, captioned, “There will only ever be one Anthony Rizzo.” Fans flooded the comments with messages like, “Legend forever! 44 needs to be flying soon on the foul poles!!” and “The player that made me love baseball.”
A Key Role in Cubs History
Rizzo was instrumental in the Cubs’ 2016 World Series championship.
He joined Chicago from the San Diego Padres in January 2012, after Cubs president Jed Hoyer had acquired him from the Red Sox while serving as the Padres’ general manager two years earlier.

During his time with the Cubs, Rizzo earned three All-Star selections and three Gold Gloves.
He batted cleanup for the 2016 title team, hitting .360 in the Fall Classic.
Additionally, Rizzo won Platinum Glove honors in 2016, a Silver Slugger the same year, and the Roberto Clemente Award in 2017.
