Cincinnati Reds Claim Dodgers Catcher Ben Rortvedt Off Waivers
The Cincinnati Reds have picked up Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Ben Rortvedt off waivers, according to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. The Dodgers did not officially announce a designation for assignment or waive Rortvedt, leaving an opening on their roster.

Under-the-Radar Acquisition
Rortvedt was part of a trade the Dodgers made with the Tampa Bay Rays just before the trade deadline this past season, which included two pitchers in exchange for catcher Hunter Feduccia. Primarily a career minor leaguer, Rortvedt spent most of the season at Triple-A Oklahoma City, providing depth for the organization.
Stepping Into a Bigger Role
Rortvedt’s role changed quickly after injuries sidelined Will Smith (finger fracture) and Dalton Rushing (leg injury). He quickly became a trusted presence for the Dodgers’ pitching staff, helping guide them through games. During his August stint, Los Angeles’ starting rotation posted a remarkable 1.00 ERA, a key factor in their 2025 World Series run.

Though Rortvedt’s bat remained light, with a .152 average, he contributed a few critical hits during the stretch run. With the Dodgers unlikely to carry three catchers next season, his departure reduces speculation that Dalton Rushing might be moved in the offseason.
