BREAKING: Tigers Lose Four-Star Wide Receiver to Transfer Portal

Missouri football suffered its first notable transfer portal loss of the 2025 season on Tuesday, as redshirt freshman wide receiver James Madison II officially entered the portal. The move comes just a day after another four-star recruit flipped from Missouri to Arkansas, highlighting the Tigers’ recent challenges in retaining talent in a competitive SEC landscape.

Madison, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound receiver from Florida’s St. Thomas Aquinas High School, was one of the top targets in the 2024 recruiting class. Highly rated for his size, athleticism, and a remarkable 6-foot-8 wingspan, Madison was viewed as a potential game-changer in Missouri’s passing attack by head coach Eli Drinkwitz and his staff.

Despite the high expectations, Madison struggled to find a role over his two seasons in Columbia. During his freshman season, he was redshirted, a move designed to allow him to develop behind an experienced group of receivers, including future NFL talent Luther Burden. In 2025, opportunities remained limited. Madison appeared in only three games, totaling 19 snaps, and did not record a single reception. With a deep and experienced receiving corps, he found himself buried on the depth chart with little chance to make an impact on the field.

While Missouri’s passing game experienced its share of struggles this season, Madison’s transfer appears to be motivated more by a desire for playing time than by team-wide offensive issues. With his talent and physical traits, Madison now seeks a program where he can contribute more significantly and showcase the skills that made him a highly rated recruit out of high school.

Missouri has been active in the transfer portal in recent years, bringing in key contributors to address immediate needs. However, losing Madison—who was part of the Tigers’ highly touted recruiting class—represents a tangible setback for a program still trying to build depth and consistency at the receiver position.

For fans, Madison’s departure is a reminder of the growing influence of the transfer portal in college football. Players now have the flexibility to seek better opportunities elsewhere, which can provide immediate benefits to their careers but also poses challenges for programs aiming to develop continuity.

Moving forward, Missouri will need to evaluate its roster and potentially look to the portal or future recruiting classes to fill the void left by Madison. Meanwhile, Madison will explore programs where he can see the field regularly and maximize his potential, a move that could prove mutually beneficial for both player and program.

Though his time with the Tigers was brief and largely under the radar, Madison’s talent and potential were undeniable. Fans will now watch closely to see where this former four-star recruit lands, while Missouri adjusts to the reality of life without him in the receiving corps.
