WELCOME-BACK: Gamecocks Freshman Returns Strong After Month-Long Absence

South Carolina women’s basketball welcomed back one of its promising freshmen on Sunday as Agot Makeer returned to the court in the Gamecocks’ dominant 96–55 victory over Providence at Colonial Life Arena. The guard had been sidelined for nearly a month while in concussion protocol, missing five consecutive games.

Makeer made an immediate impact in her return, recording the first double-double of her college career with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Her performance came in her first action since South Carolina’s Thanksgiving loss to Texas.

Head coach Dawn Staley acknowledged some early rust but was pleased with Makeer’s overall effort. Staley noted that extended playing time helped the freshman settle in, particularly during the second half when she showed strong rhythm and confidence.

Makeer logged a career-high 23 minutes, struggling early with limited production in the first half. However, she found her stride after halftime, playing the entire third quarter and leading the team during that stretch with seven points and six rebounds.

Learning While Sidelined

Despite being unable to play, Makeer said the time on the bench gave her a valuable new perspective. She credited her teammates and coaches for helping her stay confident and engaged during her recovery. Fellow guard Tessa Johnson praised Makeer’s curiosity and willingness to learn, noting that she constantly asked questions while sidelined.

Makeer said observing the game from the sideline helped her understand the flow better, making her eventual return smoother. Her final rebound — which completed her double-double — came in the fourth quarter, drawing loud encouragement from teammates eager to see her reach the milestone.

Increased Role Amid Injury Concerns

Makeer’s expanded minutes were partly due to an apparent ankle injury suffered by star guard Ta’Niya Latson late in the first half. Latson received treatment during the second half, and Staley said she would be further evaluated the following day.

Should Latson miss any time, Makeer is expected to play a larger role alongside bench guards Ayla McDowell and Maddy McDaniel. Staley indicated that Makeer’s showing against Providence demonstrated she can be relied upon if needed.

Makeer’s strong return provides encouraging depth for South Carolina as the season progresses and reinforces confidence in the freshman’s ability to contribute moving forward.
