ESPN Report: Blake Harrell Connects With Big-Time Veteran Coach in Key Leadership Role, Strengthening Staff

January 2, 2026

The East Carolina Pirates have bolstered their coaching staff by hiring Jordon Hankins as the new defensive coordinator, filling a key leadership role ahead of the 2026 season.

Hankins comes to ECU after a successful stint at Memphis, where he served as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach from 2021 through 2025. During his tenure, he oversaw one of the American Athletic Conference’s top defenses, helping guide the Tigers to strong statistical performances in scoring defense, third-down stops, and overall yardage allowed.

“Jordon brings exactly the kind of experience and leadership we need to elevate our defense,” said head coach Blake Harrell. “His track record coordinating Group of Five defenses and developing players makes him the perfect fit for our program.”

Hankins’ hiring reflects the Pirates’ commitment to building a fast, physical, and disciplined defense. His background aligns with what coaching insiders had identified as the ideal profile for the role — a veteran coordinator with proven success in Group of Five programs.

With Hankins joining the staff, ECU is expected to maintain continuity while injecting fresh energy and experience into the defensive unit. The Pirates aim to leverage his expertise to compete at a higher level in the American Athletic Conference and to continue developing their returning roster of defensive talent.
