Manhattan – Kansas State quarterback has decided to stay with the Wildcats, ending any speculation about entering the NCAA transfer portal. The dual-threat quarterback will return to Bill Snyder Family Stadium for the 2026 season and resume his role to the team
Avery Johnson
“There’s unfinished business here, and I’m not done yet,” Johnson wrote on social media. “This program, this place, and our fans mean everything to me. The relationships I’ve built, the culture we’ve created, and the goals ahead are too important to walk away from. I believe in this team, our coaches, and that the best is still ahead.”

Johnson’s return is a significant win for new head coach Collin Klein, who recruited him out of Maize High School and has long valued him as the cornerstone of the Wildcats’ offense. Klein will reunite with Johnson on the field after previously serving one season as Kansas State’s offensive coordinator.
Last season, Johnson threw for 2,385 yards and 18 touchdowns while adding 477 rushing yards and eight scores, helping the Wildcats reach bowl eligibility. By returning, Johnson has the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy, chasing career records in both passing yards and touchdown passes.
With Johnson back in the fold, K-State secures stability and leadership at quarterback as the Wildcats aim to compete at the top of the Big 12 in 2026.
