JUST-IN: Rangers Confirm Short-Term Deal With Former In-State Rival Lefty to Bolster 2026 Rotation

The Texas Rangers have officially announced the signing of the former Houston Astros left-handed ace, to a short-term deal ahead of the 2026 season. The move fills the team’s remaining rotation spot and gives the Rangers a veteran southpaw with proven big-league experience.

Veteran who spent all eight of his MLB seasons with Houston, brings a solid track record to Texas. Over his career, he has compiled an 81-52 record with a 3.36 ERA, 1,053 strikeouts, and a 1.220 WHIP across 188 appearances. While his 2025 season was hampered by struggles, the Rangers are betting that a short-term, “prove-it” deal will allow Valdez to regain form and contribute immediately.

Framber Valdez

The timing of the deal is key. With less than a month until pitchers and catchers report for spring training, Valdez will have a full preseason to prepare, giving Texas an experienced option at the backend of its rotation.

The agreement also gives both sides flexibility: the Rangers avoid a long-term financial commitment, while Valdez has the opportunity to showcase his abilities and potentially secure a larger contract in the future.

This move comes amid an active offseason for the Rangers, who have been targeting cost-effective ways to round out their pitching staff. The addition of Valdez, a former in-state rival star, is expected to generate excitement for fans and strengthen the team’s rotation heading into the 2026 campaign.

With spring training just weeks away, all eyes will be on Valdez as he transitions from the Astros to Texas and aims to make an immediate impact in a new uniform.
