BREAKING: New York Mets Veteran Pitcher and Two-Time MLB All-Star Game Selection Shocks Baseball World with Sudden Retirement

Colombian pitcher Julio Teheran has announced his retirement from professional baseball after representing Colombia in the World Baseball Classic.

The 35-year-old revealed to reporters that he would step away from the game following Colombia’s 4–3 victory over Panama on March 9, which marked the final WBC game for both teams.

Teheran had not appeared in Major League Baseball since 2024, when he made a single start for the New York Mets, surrendering four runs over 2.2 innings.

He spent the following season playing for Toros de Tijuana in the Mexican League, where he posted a 4–3 record with a 6.95 ERA across 14 appearances, including 12 starts.

Originally scheduled to pitch during pool play on March 7, Teheran experienced shoulder discomfort while warming up and ultimately did not throw a pitch in the 2026 WBC.

Across 13 MLB seasons, Teheran built a long career and was selected to the MLB All-Star Game in 2014 and 2016 while playing for the Atlanta Braves.

He retires with an 81–82 record and a 3.85 ERA in 255 games (248 starts) with the Braves (2011–19), Los Angeles Angels, Detroit Tigers, Milwaukee Brewers, and the Mets.

Teheran also represented Colombia in the 2017 edition of the WBC, earning a win in his only start during that tournament.

When he debuted for Atlanta in 2011 at just 20 years old, he was the youngest pitcher in the National League and shared the roster with players such as Freddie Freeman, Jason Heyward, Brian McCann, and future Hall of Famer Chipper Jones.

After more than a decade in professional baseball, Teheran now turns the page to the next chapter of his career with an extensive résumé and years of experience in the game. ⚾
