Just In: Philadelphia Phillies Continue Aggressive Spending, Securing Another Core Player with $135 Million Contract

The Philadelphia Phillies first brought left-handed pitcher Jesus Luzardo to the organization in December 2024 after acquiring him from the Miami Marlins in exchange for two minor league prospects.

On March 9, the Phillies made it clear they want Luzardo to remain a long-term part of their plans. According to multiple reports, the team and the Peruvian-born pitcher have agreed to a five-year contract extension that will keep him in Philadelphia through the 2031 season.

Luzardo delivered a strong campaign last year, finishing with a 15–7 record and a 3.92 ERA across 32 starts. The season marked career bests for him in wins, innings pitched (183.2), and strikeouts (216).

The timing of the deal also aligns with recent changes in the Phillies’ pitching staff. Left-hander Ranger Suarez departed in free agency to join the Boston Red Sox, while veteran Aaron Nola is coming off the most difficult season of his career.

Meanwhile, ace Zack Wheeler, now 35, is working his way back after undergoing thoracic outlet decompression surgery, which sidelined him during the Phillies’ shortened postseason run.

With uncertainty surrounding parts of the rotation, Luzardo provides Philadelphia with a younger and reliable arm who can help anchor the pitching staff as the team gradually transitions toward a new generation of starters. ⚾
