Major Special Teams Shakeup: New York Giants Confirm Sudden Exit of Another Key Playmaker, Leaving Fans and Roster in Spotlight

The New York Giants officially announced the release of two veteran players on March 12, during the first week of NFL free agency, as noted on the league’s transaction log.

Punter Jamie Gillan and linebacker Chris Board were both cut, a move first reported by Giants reporter Mike Obermuller on X.

Gillan’s release came after the team spent big on former Baltimore Ravens punter Jordan Stout, making his departure expected.

Board, meanwhile, struggled last season due to injuries, appearing in just two games, and failed to live up to expectations from his previous stint with the Ravens.

Despite being a former Ravens special teamer, Board was not retained under new head coach Brian Harbaugh, as the Giants look to revamp their linebacker and special teams depth.

Financially, the cuts will carry dead money charges, with Gillan accounting for just over $2.133 million and Board $1.25 million in 2026. Over the Cap currently lists the Giants’ available cap space at approximately $12.083 million, though further moves could alter that total.

The team’s special teams overhaul has continued with the signing of kicker Jason Sanders, prompting speculation that veteran Graham Gano could be next.

While cutting Gano would free up $4.5 million in cap space, the Giants may allow competition between the two veterans this spring, as Sanders returns from a long-term injury.

For now, head coach Harbaugh and GM Joe Schoen appear content with their current roster strategy, but additional adjustments may come as free agency progresses.
