The New York Mets have developed a bit of a pattern of acquiring former New York Yankees players.
Could they be preparing to add another ex-Yankee via free agency?
With the MLB season in full swing and injuries piling up, now is a prime time for teams to look externally to strengthen their rosters.
In a recent projection, FanSided’s Christopher Kline suggested that the Mets could target DJ LeMahieu.
Kline notes that while LeMahieu may not be a game-changer anymore, he still brings valuable experience:
“The Yankees designated DJ LeMahieu for assignment last winter after seven seasons.
At 37, he’s a three-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner with a strong track record.
As a depth option—nothing more, nothing less—he’s still worth considering.
No team picks up former Yankees as often as the crosstown Mets; it almost seems like a point of pride.”
The Mets do have some gaps in infield depth, which could make LeMahieu an appealing choice.
However, his offensive production has been weak in recent years. In 2025, he hit .266 with 12 RBIs over 128 at-bats and an OPS+ of 91. In 2024, he struggled through 67 games with a .204 average and an OPS+ of 52.
Elsewhere with the Mets, they are currently facing the San Francisco Giants out west. On Friday, Juan Soto suffered a calf injury, which an MRI later confirmed as a minor sprain.
The team will continue monitoring his status. On Saturday, the Mets added Luke Jackson on a minor-league deal, signaling that more roster moves could be coming soon.
