Phillies’ exit to a new chapter: Astros Shock League With Bold Roster Move, Signing Recently Released Former Phillies Starter in High-Upside Gamble to Bolster Injury-Riddled Rotation

The Houston Astros’ pitching staff has been hit hard early in the 2026 season, with multiple starters and relievers sidelined by injury. As a result, general manager Dana Brown has indicated the team may need to rely on internal options to help stabilize the rotation, at least until key arms return.

Names like Kai-Wei Teng have been considered for starting roles, but with Hunter Brown and Cristian Javier still working their way back, Houston still needs a reliable veteran to absorb innings and ease the pressure on the bullpen.

That situation may have opened the door for a surprising opportunity on the market following a move by another organization.

Veteran pitcher Taijuan Walker was recently released by the Philadelphia Phillies, making him a free agent after a rough start to the 2026 campaign. Despite his struggles this year, Walker has long been viewed as a durable, experienced starter capable of handling heavy workloads.

The Phillies will absorb the remainder of his contract after he signed a four-year, $72 million deal prior to the 2023 season, but his availability now presents a low-risk option for pitching-needy teams.

Given Houston’s current rotation uncertainty—with Mike Burrows and Lance McCullers Jr. among the few consistent starters and others still injured—the Astros could view Walker as a short-term solution.

DISASTER: Philadelphia Phillies Release Taijuan Walker, Panic MOVES Loom Amid Eight-Game Skid

A league-minimum “prove-it” deal could make sense for both sides: Houston gets an experienced arm who can eat innings, while Walker gets a chance to rebuild his value. If he regains form, he could become a useful mid-rotation piece; if not, the Astros would still gain valuable depth.

Over his career, Walker owns a 4.27 ERA across more than 1,300 innings with a solid ability to miss bats and a deep pitch mix. Backed by one of MLB’s stronger defenses, he could benefit from Houston’s overall structure if given a fresh start.

While it’s not guaranteed the Astros will make the move, Walker represents a logical and low-cost option as they look to stabilize their rotation during a difficult stretch.
