The Philadelphia Phillies have stumbled out of the gate in disastrous fashion, sitting at 10–19 and already far behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East race.
With such a poor start, the team could soon find itself shifting focus toward selling pieces at the trade deadline rather than competing.
After a disappointing end to the 2025 season, Philadelphia’s roster is beginning to show its age, but it still features players who could draw interest from contenders—especially in the bullpen.
One of the most intriguing names is closer Jhoan Duran.
Duran is currently sidelined on the 15-day injured list with a left oblique strain, an injury that can take time to fully heal.
However, if he returns before the deadline, he could quickly become one of the most sought-after relievers on the market.
Some analysts believe teams like the Texas Rangers could pursue a top closer, and Duran could fit that role if the Phillies decide to move him. Despite uncertainty around who the best available closer will be, Duran’s combination of performance and team control makes him a strong candidate.
Even with his injury, Duran has been effective this season, posting a 1.35 ERA with five saves in limited appearances. With one more year of control remaining, the Phillies could receive a strong return if they choose to trade him before he approaches free agency.
Meanwhile, the organization has already made changes by firing manager Rob Thomson and naming Don Mattingly as interim. While the team picked up a win under new leadership, their long-term direction will depend on whether they can recover or ultimately commit to selling ahead of the deadline.
