Former San Diego Padres outfielder Brian O’Grady announced his retirement from professional baseball on Saturday, bringing an end to a career that spanned more than 12 years and took him across multiple countries and leagues.
In a heartfelt post on X, O’Grady reflected on his journey through Major League Baseball and stops in Japan, South Korea, Mexico, and other destinations, expressing gratitude for the experiences, relationships, and life lessons baseball provided.
He said the sport not only fulfilled his childhood dream of reaching the majors but also led him to his wife, children, and the life he cherishes today.
O’Grady, 34, spent part of the 2021 season with the Padres, appearing in 32 games primarily as a reserve outfielder and pinch hitter. He recorded eight hits in 51 at-bats while drawing eight walks.
Although his major league production was limited, he excelled with Triple-A El Paso that year, posting a .281 batting average with a .547 slugging percentage in 74 games.
A Philadelphia native and Rutgers product, O’Grady appeared in the majors with the Cincinnati Reds, Tampa Bay Rays, and Padres from 2019-21. Across 62 MLB games, he hit .184 with four home runs and 12 RBIs.
His baseball journey extended far beyond the major leagues. After playing in the Korean Baseball Organization with the Hanwha Eagles in 2023, O’Grady returned to North America and continued his career in independent baseball and the Mexican League.
He spent the past two seasons with Union Laguna in Mexico before deciding to retire.
Over the course of his career, O’Grady played 658 minor league games, 227 games in international leagues, and 186 contests in independent baseball, leaving behind a well-traveled professional résumé that stretched across several countries and levels of competition.
