The New York Mets used Thursday’s off day to make a move involving their 40-man roster, adding reliever Jefry Yan before immediately assigning him back to Triple-A Syracuse. The transaction doesn’t guarantee a major league promotion but serves as protection against a possible opt-out while keeping the hard-throwing left-hander in the organization.
Yan’s overall numbers this season are intriguing. Between Triple-A Syracuse and Double-A Binghamton, he owns a 3.78 ERA, a respectable mark that has helped put him on the Mets’ radar.
What truly stands out, however, are his extreme strikeout and walk rates. Yan has struck out hitters at an eye-popping 17.0 K/9 clip across 33.1 innings while also issuing 6.5 walks per nine innings. The ability to miss bats has never been in question, but command continues to be the biggest obstacle in his development despite years of pitching in the Dominican Republic, Japan, and the United States.

If Yan eventually reaches the majors, he could quickly become one of the more entertaining players on the roster. Mets fans may remember him from spring training when an exuberant celebration after a March 3 appearance generated plenty of discussion.

Unlike Edwin Díaz’s unfortunate injury during the 2023 World Baseball Classic, Yan’s attention-grabbing moment simply showcased the energy and enthusiasm he brings to the field.
The Mets have faced criticism this season for lacking personality and identity, something Hall of Famer Pedro Martínez recently pointed out. While Yan alone is unlikely to change the team’s fortunes, his passion and unique presence could provide a spark if he earns a call-up later this year.
A career minor leaguer with a 4.61 ERA and ongoing control issues, Yan remains far from a sure thing. Still, the Mets could take a closer look at him after the trade deadline to determine whether his electric stuff can translate to the major league level.
Even if his impact on the standings proves limited, Yan seems destined to attract attention. Whether it’s through strikeouts, celebrations, or pure emotion on the mound, he has the potential to become one of the more memorable stories of the Mets’ season. And if he records his first major league strikeout, it may provide Mets fans with a rare moment of excitement during an otherwise frustrating year.
