The Atlanta Braves have climbed back into the National League playoff race, but with the Aug. 3 trade deadline approaching, strengthening the starting rotation remains one of the organization’s top priorities.
Injuries and inconsistency have tested Atlanta’s pitching depth throughout the season, making the addition of a proven veteran starter an appealing option as the club looks to make another postseason push.
One name that continues to surface in trade speculation is Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Mitch Keller.
The 30-year-old is under contract through the 2028 season after signing a five-year, $77 million extension before the 2024 campaign, giving any acquiring team multiple years of control rather than just a rental for the remainder of 2026.
Although Keller’s overall numbers this season have been uneven, evaluators around the league still view him as a durable innings-eater with frontline potential.
His ability to consistently work deep into games would provide valuable stability behind Atlanta’s top starters while easing the workload on a bullpen that has been heavily taxed during the season.
From Pittsburgh’s perspective, moving Keller could accelerate a retooling effort if the Pirates decide to sell at the deadline.
Atlanta, meanwhile, possesses enough young talent to assemble a competitive trade package without completely depleting its farm system, making the two clubs logical trade partners.
The biggest hurdle would be Keller’s remaining financial commitment, as the Braves would need to absorb the salary attached to his long-term contract.
Still, if Atlanta believes another reliable starter is the missing piece in its pursuit of October success, Keller could emerge as one of the franchise’s most attractive trade targets before the deadline.
