The New York Mets are expected to be firm sellers ahead of the August 3 trade deadline, with the organization likely to move veterans on expiring contracts as it focuses on building for the 2027 season.
Even so, there is growing speculation that the front office could make a surprising addition if the right long-term opportunity becomes available.
One area of interest could be the starting rotation. Rather than pursuing a rental, the Mets have been linked to controllable arms such as Reid Detmers and Jose Soriano of the Los Angeles Angels.
ESPN also identified acquiring a young, established starter as one of New York’s potential trade deadline objectives, despite the club’s status as a seller.
Landing either Angels pitcher would likely require a significant return. Catcher Francisco Alvarez has been mentioned as a possible trade chip, especially with the Mets showing increasing confidence in Luis Torrens behind the plate.
However, a blockbuster deal between two selling teams remains unlikely, making such a move difficult to envision.
Other pitchers discussed as possible targets include Seattle Mariners starters Emerson Hancock and Luis Castillo, while Joe Ryan was also mentioned despite Minnesota’s current buying stance.
Ultimately, the Mets face the challenge of improving their 2027 outlook without a deep pool of premium trade assets, meaning any major addition would likely require creative maneuvering by the front office.
