The Chicago Cubs have made several roster moves ahead of Friday’s series opener against the Seattle Mariners, most notably activating Daniel Palencia from the injured list.
The hard-throwing right-hander returns to give Chicago another powerful option for the late innings after being sidelined since June 15.
Meanwhile, Javier Assad has been optioned back to Triple-A Iowa despite putting together an impressive season whenever the Cubs have needed him.
With minor-league options still available, Chicago chose to send Assad down in order to create room for a fresh arm, though his contributions have been valuable to the pitching staff throughout the season.

The Cubs also added Gabriel Arias to the 26-man roster after claiming the infielder off waivers from the New York Mets.
Arias brings strong defensive ability in the middle infield and provides important depth with Dansby Swanson sidelined by an oblique injury.
His arrival gives Chicago additional insurance behind Nico Hoerner and Pedro Ramirez.

Palencia’s return could be particularly important as the Cubs approach the stretch run. Jacob Webb has emerged as a reliable closer after an excellent season, while Palencia now gives manager Craig Counsell another high-velocity weapon to deploy before the ninth inning.
If Chicago can keep Palencia healthy alongside Justin Steele, Ben Brown and Webb, the Cubs could have a formidable pitching combination for September and the postseason.
