The New York Mets have consistently demonstrated that they are willing to spend aggressively in their pursuit of a competitive roster.
While that financial commitment has not always translated into the success the organization hoped for, owner Steve Cohen has clearly shown a willingness to invest heavily in the team.
That spending power, however, can sometimes work against the Mets in the rumor mill.
Because the league knows Cohen has the resources to make major deals, New York can frequently become part of trade and free-agent speculation simply because its involvement could give agents and players additional leverage.
That appears to be the case in the latest rumors surrounding two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal.
According to USA Todayโs Bob Nightengale, the Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers currently stand out as the only two teams expected to make serious efforts to sign the star pitcher, although the Mets’ inclusion could also be an attempt by Skubal’s representatives to drive up his eventual price.
Much will ultimately depend on Skubal’s asking price. Some reports have suggested that the left-hander could command a contract worth around $500 million, although the possibility of an MLB lockout and potential changes to the league’s economic structure could significantly affect the free-agent market.
For now, the Mets remain one of the most prominent names connected to Skubal, but whether that interest is genuine or simply leverage remains uncertain.
