Despite a string of injuries, the New York Yankees have managed to stay competitive, but there’s still a sense they need to bolster their roster at the trade deadline. One major area of concern is the starting rotation, prompting speculation that the team should acquire another starter.
Empire Sports Media recently floated a trade idea that would address this need—targeting Nick Martinez of the Cincinnati Reds. Though Martinez has primarily been used as a reliever throughout his career, he transitioned to a full-time starting role in 2025 and has performed well. He currently sports a 3.66 ERA with 40 strikeouts in 51.2 innings. While not known for high strikeout numbers, Martinez remains a dependable arm who could fill a key role in the Yankees’ rotation.
“Landing a number three or four starter would be perfectly acceptable, and Nick Martinez is a strong candidate,” wrote Ryan Garcia. He added that with Martinez set to become a free agent and the Reds struggling in a competitive NL, Cincinnati might be open to trading him for prospects—especially since he’s not eligible for a Qualifying Offer this offseason.
Luis Gil’s Uncertain Timeline
Complicating matters is the uncertain return of standout rookie Luis Gil. Per a RotoBaller report, Gil is progressing in his throwing program, but there’s a chance he won’t rejoin the rotation until July. Gil, who strained his right lat in spring training, has been on the 60-day injured list since March. Even if he avoids setbacks, his midseason return leaves the Yankees with limited time to assess whether he can deliver the innings they need.

Rekindled Interest in Martinez
According to Sports Illustrated’s Pat Ragazzo, the Yankees had previously shown interest in Martinez at last year’s trade deadline when he was still pitching out of the bullpen. Now as a starter, he could be an even more appealing option.
Martinez is owed $14 million this season and holds a $12 million player option for next year. The 33-year-old has logged 68 innings so far in 2025, with a 2.88 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP over his last 25 innings, walking just three batters. His six-pitch mix provides valuable flexibility for any pitching staff.
Signed to a one-year, $21 million contract, Martinez is expected to become a free agent after this season, making him a potential rental. For a playoff-bound Yankees team, that might be just what they need.
