Significant Addition: Kansas State Tightens Grip on Transfer Market with Another Key Acquisition From Rival Team

Kansas State men’s basketball head coach Jerome Tang has secured a significant addition to the Wildcats’ roster with the commitment of Bowling Green transfer Marcus Johnson.

The 6-foot-7, 265-pound forward announced his decision on May 21, becoming the fifth transfer to join K-State’s 2025 class.

Johnson, a native of Akron, Ohio, began his collegiate career at Division II Wheeling University, where he averaged 21.6 points per game during the 2023–24 season.

He transferred to Bowling Green for the 2024–25 season, making an immediate impact by averaging 16.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game.

His shooting efficiency stood out, with a 43% field goal percentage, 39.4% from beyond the arc, and an impressive 89.8% from the free-throw line.

Johnson’s scoring prowess was evident throughout the season, as he scored in double figures in 26 of 32 games and led the team with 13 games of 20 or more points.

Notably, he recorded 23 points against Michigan State, showcasing his ability to perform against Power Five competition.

His addition comes at a crucial time for Kansas State, which is undergoing a roster overhaul after a 16–17 season and the departure of several key players, including Dug McDaniel and Brendan Hausen.

Johnson joins fellow transfers Nate Johnson (Akron), Abdi Bashir Jr. (Monmouth), Khamari McGriff (UNC-Wilmington), and junior college center Stephen Osei, as well as incoming freshmen Andrej Kostic and Exavier Wilson.

Head coach Jerome Tang, who led the Wildcats to an Elite Eight appearance in his first season, is looking to rebuild and return to NCAA Tournament contention.

Johnson’s versatility as a wing with a strong shooting touch and physical presence is expected to play a significant role in the team’s resurgence.
