The St. Louis Cardinals are off to a surprisingly strong start to the 2025 MLB season. Despite exploring trade options for Nolan Arenado during the offseason, the team now finds itself in a National League Wild Card spot as June begins.
With playoff hopes alive, the Cardinals are continuing to strengthen their roster, recently adding left-handed pitcher Tyler Matzek, who began the year with the Yankees, to boost their bullpen depth.
The Cardinals announced that they have signed the 34-year-old Matzek to a minor league contract and assigned him to their Triple-A affiliate in Memphis.
Matzek, who holds a career 3.73 ERA over seven MLB seasons and was part of Atlanta’s 2021 World Series-winning team, made seven appearances for the Yankees this season, posting a 4.26 ERA.
While most of his outings came in low-leverage situations, he did contribute two key outs in a May 14 victory over the Mariners — his most recent MLB appearance.
With the Yankees soon expected to place Luke Weaver on the injured list, Matzek could have provided valuable depth had St. Louis not picked him up.
