The Cincinnati Reds optioned Christian Encarnacion-Strand to Triple-A Louisville on Saturday to activate outfielder Jake Fraley from the injured list — a decision that not only reflects Encarnacion-Strand’s disappointing season but may also signal a turning point in the team’s long-term plans for the once-promising slugger.

Encarnacion-Strand, who was expected to be a cornerstone of the Reds’ offense, has struggled mightily at the plate this year, slashing just .208/.234/.377 with a 60 wRC+, and his defensive performance has also been subpar, with poor metrics at both corner infield positions.

As he loses ground to more consistent players like Spencer Steer, and with young prospects like Cam Collier and Sal Stewart emerging as future options, the Reds may be preparing to move on.

While the front office hasn’t openly shopped Encarnacion-Strand ahead of the trade deadline, his remaining minor league options, pre-arbitration status, and power potential could make him an attractive trade chip for teams in need of a corner bat — such as the Mariners or Red Sox. If another team comes calling, it’s becoming increasingly likely that the Reds will listen.
