Texas Playoff Hopes Shaken: In A Stunning Setback, Rangers Lose Trusted Bullpen Arm To Injury With Wild Card Race Heating Up

The Texas Rangers placed veteran left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a right shoulder strain, retroactive to Monday. He will be eligible to return on Sept. 16. To fill the roster spot, right-hander Cole Winn was reinstated from the injured list.

Coulombe, 35, signed a one-year, $3 million deal with Minnesota last offseason and was dominant for the Twins before being traded to Texas for pitching prospect Garrett Horn. In 31 innings with Minnesota, he gave up just four runs while striking out 31 and walking nine, starting the year with a streak of 16 1/3 scoreless innings.

Since joining the Rangers, however, Coulombe has struggled, giving up seven earned runs across 8 1/3 innings. His most recent outing against the Angels on Aug. 26 was especially rough, as he recorded just one out while surrendering three runs on three hits, including two home runs.

The Rangers, sitting a half-game behind the Mariners for the final American League Wild Card spot at 73-69, will need their bullpen at full strength for the stretch run. If Coulombe is able to return later this month, his experience and arsenal — featuring a cutter, sinker, sweeper, four-seamer, and knuckle curve — could be valuable in the postseason push.

Looking ahead, there’s speculation about whether Coulombe might rejoin the Twins in 2026. He’s already had two separate stints in Minnesota (2020–2022, 2025), and given his recent struggles and injury, his next contract could come at a reduced cost. The Twins are expected to overhaul their bullpen, and Coulombe could provide a reliable, low-cost veteran option.

While his future is uncertain, a reunion with Minnesota would likely make him one of the club’s most trusted relievers unless they land a bigger name this offseason.
