Major Blow: Kansas State’s star guard shocks fans with lightning-fast commitment to Texas A&M—transfer portal move turns heads instantly.

Former Kansas State point guard P.J. Haggerty wrapped up the 2025–26 campaign as one of the nation’s most prolific scorers, averaging more than 23 points per game. He not only paced the Wildcats offensively but also finished fourth nationally in scoring after the NCAA Tournament.

Following the season, Haggerty entered the transfer portal—joining a wave of high-profile players—and quickly rose to become one of the most sought-after names available. It didn’t take long for him to make his next move, either. On April 10, he revealed via social media that he would be heading to Texas A&M, bringing him closer to his hometown of Crosby, Texas.

In ESPN’s latest Top 100 transfer rankings, Haggerty checks in at No. 7 overall. He shares elite company with players like Milan Momcilovic (Iowa State), Flory Bidunga (Kansas), John Blackwell (Wisconsin), Robert Wright III (BYU), and David Punch (TCU). Among those top names, only a few—including Haggerty—have already secured new programs, with Punch committing to Texas and Bidunga heading to Louisville.

Haggerty’s inclusion among that group is no surprise considering his production. During the 2025–26 season, he led Kansas State in scoring for 18 straight games, a streak that stretched from nonconference play against South Dakota through a late-February matchup with TCU.

Originally recruited by former head coach Jerome Tang, Haggerty continued the program’s strong tradition at the point guard position. His lone season compares favorably to former Wildcat standouts like Marquise Nowell and Nijel Pack, particularly in scoring efficiency—shooting better than 45% from the field, similar to Pack’s output in 2021–22. Pack later finished his career with Oklahoma after previous stops at Kansas State and Miami.

With Haggerty gone, new head coach Casey Alexander has retooled the backcourt with several additions. Transfers Montana Wheeler (Bradley) and Isaiah Abraham (Georgetown), along with incoming freshman Jaylen Alexander, are expected to step into significant roles. Each has the potential to average double figures and possibly replicate—or even surpass—Haggerty’s scoring impact.

Meanwhile, returning sophomore Andrej Kostic could see an expanded role. After coming off the bench last season, he showed flashes as a perimeter threat and may transition into a more prominent guard position.

The Wildcats also bring in additional backcourt talent, including Colorado State transfer Brandon Rechsteiner. As practices begin, Kansas State will be looking for new breakout stars to emerge and reshape the team’s identity heading into the upcoming season.
