As the Philadelphia Phillies look to recover from yet another series defeat to the Chicago Cubs, they may need to seriously consider making roster upgrades sooner rather than later.
An 8–10 start is far from what was expected of a team viewed as a contender, and with three consecutive series losses, concerns are beginning to mount.
On Wednesday, Jesus Luzardo delivered his third poor outing of the season—and his worst yet—giving up eight earned runs. It also marked the third time this year he has surrendered at least five runs, raising red flags about the rotation.
However, pitching isn’t the only issue. While Luzardo’s struggles drew attention, the offense also faltered, managing just two runs in the game. Generating consistent scoring has become a growing problem, and adding a right-handed bat could help address it.
One possible target is Isaac Paredes of the Houston Astros. The infielder was involved in trade rumors during the offseason, and with Houston off to a slow start, he could once again be a viable trade option.

Paredes Could Fill a Key Gap
Third base stands out as a position in need of improvement for Philadelphia. Alec Bohm has struggled early once again, leaving the team searching for more production at the spot.
While Edmundo Sosa could see increased playing time, he’s best suited as a versatile utility option. Paredes, on the other hand, offers a more complete solution—he can handle third base defensively and brings proven power at the plate.
Last season, he posted solid numbers, including 20 home runs and 53 RBIs in just over 100 games, showing flashes of All-Star potential. Though he’s off to a slower start this year, his track record and age (27) make him an appealing target.
As a right-handed hitter, Paredes would also help balance a lineup that leans heavily on left-handed stars like Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber.
Given the Astros’ early-season struggles, there’s a realistic chance Paredes could be made available—and if he is, the Phillies should strongly consider making a move.
