Neo Avdalas Transfers to North Carolina After Standout Freshman Season at Virginia Tech
North Carolina has added another talented international prospect to its roster, landing former Virginia Tech guard Neo Avdalas. The 6-foot-9 rising sophomore from Greece arrives in Chapel Hill after an impressive freshman campaign in the ACC, where he quickly established himself as one of the conference’s top young playmakers.
Strong Freshman Season in the ACC
Avdalas appeared in 31 games for the Hokies during the 2025 season, averaging 12.1 points and 4.6 assists per game. His performance earned him ACC Rookie of the Week honors twice, making him one of only five freshmen in the league to receive the award multiple times during the season.

The versatile guard consistently showcased his scoring ability, reaching double figures in 19 games. Among his top performances were a career-high 33 points against Providence and a 30-point outing versus Western Carolina, proving he could take over games offensively.
Elite Playmaking Ability
Beyond his scoring, Avdalas emerged as one of the ACC’s most effective facilitators. He ranked ninth in the conference in assists per game and finished 10th in assist-to-turnover ratio.

The Athens native recorded five or more assists in 15 games throughout the season, including a season-high nine assists against Charleston Southern. His vision and ball-handling made him the clear leader of Virginia Tech’s offense, finishing with 141 total assists — 38 more than any other player on the roster.
Big Performance Against North Carolina
One of Avdalas’ most memorable performances came against his future team. On Feb. 28 at the Smith Center, he scored 19 points against North Carolina while knocking down three three-pointers and adding five assists.

His ability to create offense both for himself and teammates stood out throughout the year, especially from beyond the arc. Avdalas made at least three three-pointers in eight different games during the season.
International Experience Before College
Before joining Virginia Tech, Avdalas already had professional experience playing in Greece’s top HEBA A1 league. He spent time with AS Karditsas during the 2023-24 season before moving to Peristeri BC in 2024-25.
That background helped accelerate his development and prepare him for the physicality and pace of ACC basketball.
A Major Addition for the Tar Heels
North Carolina adds a versatile, experienced guard who can handle the ball, create plays, and stretch the floor offensively. Avdalas finished third on the Hokies in three-pointers made with 49 and ranked fourth in scoring, highlighting his all-around impact.
With his size, international experience, and proven ACC production, Avdalas could become an important piece for the Tar Heels heading into the upcoming season.
