A recent trade prediction involving the Los Angeles Dodgers suggests the club could look to acquire catcher Ben Rortvedt from the New York Mets to help fill the void left by injured catcher Will Smith.
The logic behind the proposal is straightforward. Rortvedt briefly spent time with the Dodgers organization last season, appearing in 18 games and gaining familiarity with the pitching staff, clubhouse, and organizational structure.
With the Mets not currently relying on him at the major league level, he could represent a low-cost depth option for Los Angeles.

From New York’s perspective, however, any deal should bring back something tangible. While Rortvedt is not considered a major trade asset, the Mets would likely prefer a prospect, international bonus pool space, or another player-related return rather than simply receiving cash.
Since he is not on the 40-man roster and there is no immediate roster pressure, the Mets have little reason to move him without extracting some value.

Rortvedt owns a career .190 major league batting average and is hitting .220/.304/.410 at Triple-A Syracuse this season.
His appeal comes more from his defensive abilities and experience behind the plate than from his offensive production.
Although a blockbuster return is unrealistic, history has shown that even seemingly minor trades can pay dividends if scouting departments identify the right player.
As a result, the Mets could view Rortvedt as a useful trade chip if the Dodgers decide they need catching depth before the deadline.
