The Philadelphia Phillies have provided a positive but understated update on veteran left-handed reliever Tanner Banks, who has been sidelined since July 9 with a left forearm strain.
With Philadelphia fighting for a postseason spot, Banks recently took an important step in his recovery by throwing a live batting-practice session on August 18 without experiencing any problems.
Banks is expected to throw at least one more live BP before the Phillies decide whether to send him on a minor-league rehab assignment.
The latest update suggests Philadelphia is targeting a potential return sometime in the middle or latter part of September.
However, with the postseason approaching quickly, it remains uncertain whether Banks will be healthy and effective enough to earn a spot in the Phillies’ playoff bullpen.
The 31-year-old Banks is currently in his fifth MLB season after debuting with the Chicago White Sox in 2022.

Philadelphia acquired him in July 2024, and he has spent portions of the past three seasons with the organization.
Before suffering the injury, Banks struggled on the mound, posting an 0-4 record with a 7.14 ERA across 28 appearances, including one start. For his career, he owns an 11-13 record and a 4.01 ERA in 277 games.
Even if Banks returns, the Phillies have already strengthened their bullpen considerably. Philadelphia added left-hander Brooks Raley from the New York Mets and right-hander Caleb Kilian at the trade deadline, giving the team additional depth for its postseason push.
The Phillies are currently 69-58 and sitting in the second National League Wild Card spot after winning five consecutive games, including a 6-4 victory over the Miami Marlins.
