Recent reporting suggests the New York Mets could be preparing to move on from Mark Vientos as they begin planning for the 2027 season.
Vientos has emerged as a potential non-tender candidate this winter, according to reporting cited from SNY, meaning the Mets could decline to offer him a contract for next season rather than continue investing in the struggling infielder.
The situation is particularly notable because Vientos was once viewed as an important part of the Mets’ young core after his power-hitting breakthrough.
However, his 2026 campaign has been difficult, and his development has not progressed as the organization had hoped.
The Mets entered the season expecting more from the former top prospect, but his performance and roster fit have raised questions about whether he should remain part of the club’s long-term plans.
Vientos also spent significant time on the injured list this summer after suffering a fractured right hand. He returned to the Mets on Aug. 31 following a successful rehab assignment with Triple-A Syracuse, where he hit three home runs in one game before returning to the majors.
He immediately made an impact in his first game back, launching a solo home run against Tampa Bay, but that strong return may not be enough by itself to secure his future with the organization.
For the Mets, the coming weeks could serve as an extended audition for Vientos. With the club already looking toward a major roster reset after a disappointing season, the front office must decide whether his power potential is worth another opportunity or whether moving on would create room for other options.
A trade remains another possibility, but if New York ultimately non-tenders him, Vientos could become one of the more intriguing free agents available this winter given his previous production and remaining upside.
