Missouri Tigers football have suffered another roster departure as cornerback Shamar McNeil has officially moved on from the program, bringing his time in Columbia to an end. McNeil’s decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal was reported on January 1, 2026, after spending three seasons with the Tigers. The defensive back ultimately moved to Akron, marking the next chapter of his college football career.
His departure adds to the roster changes Missouri has experienced while working to reshape its defensive personnel under head coach Eli Drinkwitz. Although McNeil was not among the team’s established starters, losing another defensive back represents an additional adjustment for a program looking to maintain its competitiveness in the SEC.

McNeil arrived at Missouri with potential and expectations after coming out of American Heritage High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was a three-star prospect in the recruiting class and was viewed as a developmental addition to the Tigers’ secondary. During his three seasons in Columbia, however, opportunities to establish himself in the defensive rotation were limited.
He appeared in eight games across his Missouri career, recording three total tackles, one fumble recovery and one pass breakup. During the 2025 campaign, he played in just two games and finished with one tackle. Despite remaining with the program through multiple seasons, McNeil was unable to secure a consistent role in the cornerback rotation, making a transfer an opportunity to pursue a different situation and potentially receive more playing time.

His departure also comes during a period of considerable change for Missouri’s defensive backfield. The Tigers have had to address several personnel losses through graduation and the transfer portal, creating additional pressure on the coaching staff to bring in players capable of contributing immediately. McNeil was not the only defensive back to move on during the offseason, with Missouri also losing other players as part of its roster reshuffling.
The cornerback position, in particular, required attention after the program lost experienced contributors and developmental depth. Missouri responded by adding several transfer players, including Chris Graves Jr. from Ole Miss, Jahlil Florence and Sione Laulea from Oregon, alongside other defensive additions. Those moves demonstrate the coaching staff’s determination to rebuild the secondary and create stronger competition for available positions.

For McNeil, the move to Akron offers an opportunity to reset his college career and pursue a more prominent role elsewhere. After limited opportunities at Missouri, a fresh environment could give him the chance to demonstrate his abilities, gain valuable experience and become a more consistent contributor.
Meanwhile, the Tigers will continue adjusting their defensive personnel as Drinkwitz and his coaching staff work toward building a deeper and more reliable roster. While McNeil’s departure might not represent the loss of a regular starter, it is another reminder of how quickly college football rosters can change in the transfer portal era. Missouri must continue developing its returning players while ensuring its incoming additions can fill the gaps left behind.
