The Texas Rangers have struggled to meet expectations this season, falling short of the high standard they set during their 2023 championship run.
Manager Bruce Bochy has voiced his frustration, though injuries have significantly contributed to the team’s underperformance.
A positive development came on Wednesday as outfielder Wyatt Langford faced live pitching from Jon Gray and Josh Sborz—an encouraging sign in his recovery from an oblique injury suffered on June 24.
Langford, who is progressing well, told reporters he expects to need just one rehab game before rejoining the lineup, per Jeff Wilson of DLLS Sports.
The Rangers hope to have him back this weekend in a crucial series against the Padres, as they try to claw their way back into playoff contention.
Texas’ outfield, featuring Langford, Adolis García, and Evan Carter, has underwhelmed so far—due in part to injuries and off-field issues—but Langford’s return could provide a much-needed spark.
While Langford prepares to return, Gray and Sborz are also nearing comebacks, which would strengthen one of MLB’s top rotations when fully healthy.
Despite this encouraging progress, the Rangers still face a steep challenge in chasing down the Astros in the AL West.
However, with the roster’s talent and a returning Langford possibly igniting the lineup, Bochy’s squad has the potential to mount a late-season surge.
