South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer has officially added former No. 2 overall NFL Draft pick Jason Smith to his staff as an assistant offensive line coach, a move that could provide a major boost to the Gamecocks’ offensive line and player development.
Smith, a standout at Baylor, was selected second overall by the St. Louis Rams in the 2009 NFL Draft and played professionally until 2014 with the Rams, Jets, and Saints. He brings prior coaching experience from stops at North Texas and Abilene Christian, including previous collaboration with South Carolina offensive line coach Randy Clements at Baylor and North Texas in 2022.
His arrival is expected to have a significant impact on the Gamecocks’ young linemen, providing firsthand insight from a former elite player and professional veteran. Smith’s experience at both the collegiate and NFL levels makes him a valuable mentor capable of accelerating player growth and strengthening the offensive line unit.
After a challenging 2025 season, which included the dismissal of offensive coordinator Mike Shula, Beamer has been reshaping his staff to better position South Carolina for success. With returning quarterback LaNorris Sellers and the addition of Smith, the program is looking to build momentum heading into the 2026 season.
This hire is being hailed as a savvy addition, blending professional experience, coaching know-how, and elite-level credibility—potentially one of the most impactful offseason moves for Beamer and the Gamecocks.
